OIA Paddling - Championship Format

2025-2026

Below is the format to qualify for the OIA Championships: - Changes/Amendments in bold

OIA JV Championship Format

The top eleven (11) schools from each JV division, D1 & D2, qualify for the OIA JV Championship Regatta.

• There will be one (1) championship race for each gender (Girls, Boys, Mixed). 

• There will be a D2 Championship tournament and another D1 Championship Tournament for each gender (Girls, Boys, Mixed), both of which will run independently but concurrently on the same day.

• Lane Draw order is decided from the record of all schools' Regular Season Point Totals.

• Each school can choose any open lane based on their total accumulated regular-season points; the order of selection will be in descending order (greatest to least).

OIA Varsity Championship Format

All schools from each Varsity division, D1 & D2, qualify for the OIA Varsity Championship Regatta.

• There will be a total of three (3) races in each division championship for each gender (Girls, Boys, Mixed): 2 preliminaries and 1 final.

• There will be two (2) heats of up to six (6) schools from their respective division, D1 & D2, for each of the OIA Championship Regattas. 

  • Heats should be as even as possible, i.e, Heat 1: six (6); Heat 2: seven (7). Cannot be: Heat 1: five (5); Heat 2: seven (7)

• There will be a D2 Championship Tournament and another D1 Championship Tournament for each gender (Girls, Boys, Mixed), both of which will run independently but concurrently on the same day.

• Lane Draw order is decided from the record of all schools' Regular Season Point Totals.

• Each school can choose any open lane between two (2) heats of up to six (6) lanes based on their total accumulated regular season points for the preliminary events; the order of selection will be in descending order (greatest to least). There will be at least six (6), but no more than seven (7) schools in any given heat.

Top three (3) from each heat, along with the next best two (2) overall times, advancing to the Championship Final -> eight (8) schools.

***In the event of a tie in times, the last race times from the previous week will be used to determine the order of lane choice

***If a school did not race the previous week, the school will default its pick to the other school it is tied with

For JV Championships:

The winner of each championship regatta, D1 & D2, is the respective OIA champion.

For Varsity Championships

The winner of each championship regatta, D1 & D2, is the respective OIA Champion.

• The OIA will fulfill its allotted HHSAA Berths with the qualifying schools from the championship regatta in descending order, following the OIA Champion

• The number of berths allotted by the HHSAA for the HHSAA Championship Regatta in February is pending the HHSAA Final Lane Berth Calculations.

  • Division 1: Girls = 5; Boys = 5; Mixed = 5

  • Division 2: Girls = 4; Boys = 2; Mixed = 2
